Housing Choice Voucher Program (HCVP) Housing

The Housing Choice Voucher Program (HCVP) Department currently has 1,079 units allocated for vouchers. Housing Choice Vouchers allow low-income households to pay approximately one-third of their income in rent. The remainder of the rent is paid through federal subsidies to the landlord by CCHRA. Charleston County Housing contracts with the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to administer vouchers for low-income families, elderly, and/or disabled people.

WHAT WE OFFER:

1,079 vouchers allocated for use in Charleston County.
At this time, the Housing Choice Voucher Program (HCVP) waiting list is closed and the HCVP division of CCHRA is not accepting applications.
CCHRA will advertise openings for Housing Choice Voucher Program (HCVP) vouchers here and in local area newspapers.

We will post notices to announce when we will resume accepting applications. Physical locations where we will post notices are: Department of Social Services (DSS) Trident One-Stop, and Charleston County Human Services Commission.

FAMILY SELF-SUFFICIENCY (FSS) PROGRAM

Ms. Connie Dawson and her homeThe Housing Choice Voucher Program (HCVP) Housing Program helps families become self-sufficient with established goals, such as first-time home ownership, starting a small business, or college education.

Mrs. Connie Dawson is a wonderful example of one woman determined to improve her life.

For 4 years, Mrs. Dawson had been living in a home made possible through the Housing Choice Voucher Program (HCVP) program. One day, Mrs. Dawson was informed of an opportunity to purchase her home by her housing counselors, Ms. Paulette Murray. The landlord indeed wanted to sell the property to the long-term tenant.

The home received a new roof, new carpeting, throughout, and was freshly painted inside and out. Mrs. Dawson signed closing papers in September, 2001, and credits the efforts of her housing counselor, landlord, and the Housing Choice Voucher Program (HCVP) program in helping to provide her and her family with a decent place to live and rent, and eventually, to buy.
